This is an excellent original Civil War smoothside canteen. It is complete in every way other than missing outside cloth. It is in essentially the same condition as the day it was issued. the canteen is perfectly sealed. No cracks, no damage, no breaks, and no holes. The original stopper fits snuggly within the tin spout. The original cotton webbing shoulder strap is also intact, unrepaired, and complete full length, with the classic soldier tie-up knot to wear the canteen at the right length. This style of smoothside canteen is either a St. Louis Arsenal or Cincinnati Arsenal--both being essentially identical in form, design, and measurements as this one. The perfect addition to your collection....(kb2151) $315

Spectacular 8th Louisiana CS canteen. It is rare indeed that we find any equipment actually indentified to a specific unit. This is a M1858 smooth canteen. It clearly saw action with the 8th Louisiana. It has the inscription painted on the face over a painstakingly applied inscription under the paint. The inscription sits on top of the same inscription neatly scratched into the metal, then cross hatched. Best visible under magnification. Unquestionably an original. the canteen itself is excellent, with no dents and about 50% original dark gray paint. It has a very aged original cotton sling. The cork may be an early replacement of the original. The 8th Louisiana saw action i almost every battle of the ANV. As a member of Hays Brigade it fought in the Miller's cornfield at Antietam and East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg. At unset of the war the 8th had 1321 men, at Appomattox it surrendered 3 Officers and 54 enlisted men. Similar canteens without the sling and the history costs several thousand more than this one. This is exceptional. (kb10006) $2295
